How to Use a Cannabis Vape Pen: A Complete Beginner's Guide

By the JKF Team  |  Last updated July 7, 2026

Cannabis vape pens have become one of the most popular ways to consume cannabis in Brooklyn and beyond. They are discreet, portable, and deliver fast-acting effects without the smoke or lingering smell of flower. Whether you are brand new to cannabis or just new to vaping, this guide covers everything you need to know.

What Is a Cannabis Vape Pen?

A cannabis vape pen is a handheld device that heats cannabis oil to a temperature that creates vapor (not smoke) for inhalation. Unlike smoking flower, vaping does not involve combustion, which preserves more terpenes and cannabinoids while producing fewer harmful byproducts.

Most vape pens have two parts: a battery (the power source) and a cartridge or pod (which holds the cannabis oil). The battery heats a small coil inside the cartridge, vaporizing the oil so you can inhale it through the mouthpiece. Some devices combine both parts into a single disposable unit.

Types of Cannabis Vape Pens

There are three main types of cannabis vape pens at licensed Brooklyn dispensaries. Each suits different needs and experience levels.

1. Disposable Vape Pens

Disposable pens are all-in-one devices that come pre-charged and pre-filled with cannabis oil. There is nothing to assemble and no charging required. Simply inhale from the mouthpiece and the device activates automatically. They come in 0.3g, 0.5g, or 1g sizes and are perfect for first-time vapers who want zero setup. The downside is that you discard the whole unit when empty, making them slightly more expensive per milligram than refillable options.

How to use: Remove from packaging, remove any rubber plug from the mouthpiece, place it to your lips, and inhale gently for 2 to 3 seconds. Wait 10 to 15 minutes before taking another puff.

2. 510-Thread Cartridges

The 510-thread is the universal standard for cannabis vape cartridges. The name refers to the screw threading that connects the cartridge to a separate rechargeable battery. Because it is a universal standard, you can use cartridges from different brands on the same battery. This gives you the widest strain selection and lower cost per milligram over time. Most 510 batteries also have adjustable voltage settings.

How to use: Charge the battery fully, screw the cartridge on hand-tight (do not overtighten), click the button five times to turn it on, set voltage to the lowest setting, hold the button while inhaling gently for 2 to 3 seconds, then exhale slowly.

3. Pod Systems

Pod systems use proprietary pods that snap or slide into a brand-specific battery. The most popular example is STIIIZY, which uses magnetic pods that click into their dedicated battery. We carry STIIIZY pods at both our Bed-Stuy and East Williamsburg locations. Pod systems offer a secure, leak-resistant connection and are usually draw-activated (no button needed). The tradeoff is that pods only work with that brand's battery.

How to use: Charge the battery, insert the pod until it clicks into place magnetically, and inhale from the mouthpiece. Start with a small puff and wait before taking more.

How to Inhale Properly

Inhaling from a vape pen is different from smoking a joint. There are two main techniques:

Mouth-to-Lung (MTL) - Recommended for Beginners: Draw vapor slowly into your mouth for 2 to 3 seconds (like sipping through a straw), remove the pen, then inhale the vapor into your lungs with a normal breath. This gives you more control over your dose.

Direct Lung (DL) - For Experienced Users: Inhale vapor directly into your lungs in one continuous breath, similar to taking a deep breath. This delivers more vapor per hit and is better suited for people who know their tolerance. If you are new to vaping, stick with mouth-to-lung.

Temperature Settings and What They Mean

If you are using a 510-thread battery with adjustable voltage, temperature matters. Different voltages produce different experiences because various cannabinoids and terpenes vaporize at different temperatures.

Low Temperature (2.0 - 2.5V)

  • Produces small, wispy clouds
  • Best flavor and terpene preservation
  • Lighter, more cerebral effects
  • Easiest on the throat - less likely to cause coughing
  • Ideal for beginners and flavor chasers

Medium Temperature (2.5 - 3.2V)

  • Balanced vapor production
  • Good mix of flavor and potency
  • Moderate effects - the sweet spot for most users
  • This is where most people settle after some experimentation

High Temperature (3.2V and Above)

  • Bigger, denser clouds
  • Stronger, more immediate effects
  • Less flavor, more of a "hit" feeling
  • Can be harsher on the throat
  • Better for experienced users with higher tolerance

Our recommendation: Start at the lowest voltage and work your way up over multiple sessions. You might be surprised how much you enjoy the flavor and smoothness at lower temperatures.

Battery Care and Charging Tips

A few simple habits will extend your battery's life and keep sessions consistent:

  • Charge before first use. Most batteries ship partially charged. Give it a full charge before your first session.
  • Use the included charger. Using a phone charger with higher amperage can damage the battery.
  • Do not overcharge. Unplug once fully charged. Leaving it plugged in overnight reduces battery lifespan.
  • Store upright. This prevents oil from leaking into the airway.
  • Keep contacts clean. Wipe the connection point with a dry cotton swab every few cartridge changes.
  • Avoid extreme temperatures. Do not leave your vape in a hot car or freezing cold. Heat thins the oil and causes leaks, while cold thickens it and reduces vapor production.

Dosing Tips for Vape Pens

Vaping delivers effects quickly, usually within seconds to a few minutes. This makes it easier to control your dose compared to edibles, but it also means you need to pace yourself.

  • Start with one small puff. A gentle 2 to 3 second draw is plenty for your first hit.
  • Wait 10 to 15 minutes. Give the effects time to fully develop before deciding if you want more.
  • Take note of how you feel. Are you relaxed? Energized? Anxious? This helps you dial in your ideal dose over time.
  • Remember: vapes are potent. Most cartridges contain 70 to 90 percent THC. One puff from a vape pen can deliver as much THC as several hits from a joint. Less is more, especially at first.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • Clogged cartridge: Take a few short, firm puffs without activating the battery to clear the clog. Warm the cartridge in your closed hand for a minute, or carefully clear the mouthpiece with a toothpick.
  • Blinking light: Usually means the battery is dead, the cartridge is not connected properly, or there is a short circuit. Charge the battery, reattach the cartridge snugly (but not too tight), and clean the contact points with a dry cotton swab.
  • Harsh hits or burning taste: Lower your voltage setting and take shorter puffs. If the cartridge is nearly empty, the coil heats up without enough oil, creating a burnt taste. Time for a new cartridge.
  • No vapor production: Make sure the battery is charged and turned on (click the button five times rapidly on most models). Check that the cartridge is attached properly. If using a 510-thread, try unscrewing slightly - overtightening can block the connection.

Storage and Maintenance

  • Store upright with the mouthpiece pointing up to prevent leaking.
  • Keep it cool and dark. A drawer or cabinet works well. Avoid direct sunlight.
  • Detach when not in use. Remove the cartridge from the battery if you will not use it for a day or more.
  • Cap the mouthpiece when the cartridge is not in use to keep debris out.
  • Use within two to three months. Oil stays fresh for several months when stored properly, but potency and flavor degrade over time.

A Note for Brooklyn Vapers

New York law prohibits cannabis consumption in any public place where tobacco smoking is also banned. That includes sidewalks, parks, subway platforms, and most indoor spaces. You can legally use your vape pen at home or in a private residence. While vape pens are more discreet than joints, the same rules apply.

If you have questions about where you can and cannot consume, our budtenders are happy to point you in the right direction. You can also check our NY Cannabis Laws 2026 guide for a full breakdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many puffs should a beginner take?

Start with one small puff and wait 10 to 15 minutes before taking another. Cannabis vapes deliver concentrated vapor, so even a single puff can produce noticeable effects. You can always take more, but you cannot take less. Most beginners find that one to three puffs is enough for their first session.

Why is my vape pen blinking?

A blinking vape pen usually indicates one of three things: the battery is dead and needs charging, the cartridge is not connected properly, or the device has a short circuit protection activated. Try charging the battery fully, removing and reattaching the cartridge, and making sure the connection points are clean. If blinking continues, the battery may need to be replaced.

How long does a vape cartridge last?

A standard 0.5g cartridge lasts most casual users about one to two weeks, while a 1g cartridge can last two to four weeks. Heavy users may go through a 0.5g cartridge in a few days. It depends on how often you use it and how long your draws are.

Are vape pens stronger than flower?

Yes, typically. Most vape cartridges contain oil that is 70 to 90 percent THC, compared to flower which usually ranges from 15 to 25 percent THC. This means a single puff from a vape pen can deliver significantly more THC than a puff from a joint or pipe. Beginners should start with small, short puffs.

What is a 510-thread battery?

A 510-thread battery is the most common type of rechargeable vape battery. The name refers to the universal threading used to connect the battery to a cartridge. Most cannabis cartridges sold at licensed dispensaries in New York use this standard, making it easy to swap cartridges between compatible batteries.
